What the tester checks
An MOT checks that your car meets the legal minimum for road safety and emissions on the day of the test. It doesn't cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox. That's what a service is for.
The tester also checks the horn, fuel system, doors, bonnet catch and dashboard warning lights.
Understanding your result
Any faults found are graded. A dangerous or major fault means a fail; minor faults and advisories still pass.
- Dangerous
- Fail. A direct risk to road safety or the environment. Don't drive the car until it's repaired.
- Major
- Fail. Could affect safety or the environment. Get it repaired straight away.
- Minor
- Pass. No significant effect on safety, but repair it as soon as you can.
- Advisory
- Pass. Something to keep an eye on that may need work in future.
When your MOT is due
- A car needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of its registration, then one every year.
- You can have the test up to a month (minus a day) before your current MOT runs out and keep the same renewal date.
- If the car fails and stays with us for repairs, the partial retest is free as long as it's retested within 10 working days.
- Driving without a valid MOT can mean a fine of up to £1,000.
